Summer Artist Feature: Emily Prevost!

My amazing sister is today's artist feature and I'm SO proud of her! I know that I wouldn't be who I am now without her and she was one of the first people to believe in me and my art. What would I do without you sis! She is amazingly talented and creative and I know you'll be inspired!

1. How did you get into card making?
I actually first started making cards when I was in junior high or high school. I picked it back up about 8 years ago because I really needed a creative outlet that was apartment-sized. My work and studies are pretty mentally and physically taxing and it often takes me awhile to mentally unwind. Cardmaking has become an outlet for me to be creative that completely takes my mind off of everything else from my day.

2. What's your favorite thing about it?
I love email and text messages, but there's just nothing like opening your mailbox and having something handwritten and personal inside (instead of the junkmail I normally find there). When I make a card, not only do I get to put a smile on someone's face when they open their box and find a handwritten note...but the message is held by a card that has been created with this specific individual in mind. It's my way of saying "you're incredibly special to me & no storebought, pre-written message would do."

3. In your studio...what things are a must!?
Color-coordinated papers, markers, stamp pads, and embellishments (I hate to start making a card and find that my reds don't match). A papercutter (because I can't cut a straight line to save my life). Mono-adhesive...no drips, no bubbling paper, no mess.

4. What inspires you?
The people who will receive my cards. When I sit down to make a birthday card, I always think...what would this person like?, or what kind of card would represent her personality?

5. Favorite color combos right now?
black, white and red.
earthy colors...deep reds, browns, golds, and greens

6. How are handmade cards different from "store bought"?
To me, they're more personal. The card itself & the time it took to create become part of the message. Besides, I believe words are incredibly powerful -- I used to spend hours looking for a card that could say exactly what I wanted it to say. In the same amount of time (and for just a few pennies), I can create a personalized message.
